School of the Woods creates life-long learners. At every level, our system of dynamic interactive education follows contemporary educational practices and embodies the educational philosophy, principles and methodology developed by Dr. Maria Montessori. School of the Woods is the only independent school in Texas that offers a continuum of Montessori-accredited learning from early childhood through college preparatory. It is also the oldest continually operating Montessori school in greater Houston, founded in 1962 on the same campus that continues to serve its lower and middle schools, at 1321 Wirt Road in the Spring Branch area.
The Woods High School (grades 9-12) began in 1999 and currently is in interim facilities at 8300 Waterbury near the Wirt Road campus. In 2007, Woods High will move into a permanent new home to be built on its own five-acre wooded campus at 7700 Westview Drive. At the heart of all our Montessori programs is active and continuous partnership among students, parents, teachers, and because of our Montessori cross-age learning system, younger and older fellow classmates. The contribution by each partner is intrinsic in our holistic Montessori educational process. Our students currently come from nearly 60 different zip codes throughout greater Houston.
School of the Woods has always welcomed children of all abilities and talents without regard to race, color, creed, or national or ethnic origin. The School has produced more than 2,000 alumni, who have gone forward to attend more than 80 colleges and universities throughout the United States. School of the Woods is accredited by the American Montessori Society and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
